Off-the-shelf might seem like the easier option, but standard sizes, limited fabrics, and no professional fitting mean the result rarely lives up to expectations. The Problem With Off-the-Shelf
Off-the-shelf curtains and blinds are made to standard sizes, but your windows are not standard. Every home is different, whether that is a bay window, bi-fold doors, a sloped ceiling, a deep recess or a narrow frame. Even a difference of a few centimetres can mean the difference between a window treatment that looks polished and one that looks like an afterthought.
When curtains are too narrow they gap in the middle, when they are too short they hover above the floor instead of falling cleanly and when blinds are too small they rattle in the frame. These details are the first thing anyone notices when they walk into a room.
Blackout blinds are a good example of how the wrong fit can cause more than just an aesthetic problem. A standard blackout blind bought online and fitted inside a window recess will almost without exception:
- Leave gaps around the edges, meaning light seeps in at the sides and bottom
- Sit too close to the glass, trapping air with nowhere to escape, which causes condensation on the window
- Lead to moisture build-up over time and eventually mould
A made-to-measure blackout blind is fitted to the exact dimensions of your recess, eliminating light gaps around the edges while maintaining the correct clearance from the glass to allow air to circulate properly.
With made-to-measure, every piece is cut, sewn and finished to the exact dimensions of your window, for that window specifically. Nothing is approximated or adjusted to fit.

More Than Just Fabric
Off-the-shelf retailers offer a limited selection of fabrics in standard colourways. With made-to-measure, the choice is far wider, but fabric is only part of the picture.
For curtains and roman blinds, the lining you choose has just as much impact on how they look, feel and perform as the fabric itself. The right lining:
- Adds body and drape so curtains and roman blinds hang properly
- Improves insulation, helping to retain heat in winter and keep rooms cooler in summer
- Protects your fabric from UV damage and fading
- Determines how the curtain or blind moves and falls
Roman blinds can be made from the same fabrics as our curtains and are available with either a standard or blackout lining, giving you the same level of control over the finished result.
For other blind types, the materials are specific to how each blind is constructed and performs, which is why our team will always guide you through the options that are right for the style you are considering.
With made-to-measure, every element is considered together. The fabric, the lining weight, the heading style and the pole or track are each chosen to work with the others and with your specific room. That is simply not possible when you are working from a fixed product range.

Delighted with the wave curtains that Richard and the team have made and installed for us in our new home this week. While I usually make my own curtains, there's no way I could have managed a run of over 5.5m for the bi-fold doors, but Green's have done an amazing job with my fabric. The fitting took about an hour and the curtains run smoothly and look great. They have made a big difference to the space, reducing the sound echoes as well as adding colour and warmth to the room.

Curtains beautifully made and finished off, just had to hang them, gathered up and hooks attached. All members of staff were brilliant, none of them could have been more helpful. I arranged to collect the curtains but got stuck in traffic and knew I was going to be late and they would be closed. The person I spoke to on the phone said he would wait till I got there which was after 5.00pm. They are a really good well established company. We have used them in the past and parents before us. Very impressed with our visit. We were looking for vertical blinds and curtains. Helpful and friendly service without any pressure to buy. Showroom has a comprehensive range of both blinds and curtains as well as carpets and other flooring.We left with samples and at our request we made an appointment for a home visit to measure up and give us a quote. They also provide a fitting service. We believe that this is one of the best places to go in the area if you are looking for curtains, blinds, carpets, etc.
